The Skidmore College, ACS-approved Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time instructor position to begin Fall 2023. A Master’s degree or higher in chemistry, chemical education, or a related field is required, and teaching experience is preferred. Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring a diverse student population is essential. Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college located in Saratoga Springs, New York with a student population of 2,650, 24% of whom are domestic students of color, 12% are international students, and 14% are first generation students. The successful candidate will contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the academic community through their inclusive teaching and mentoring of students. With its relatively small size and student-faculty ratio (8:1), Skidmore is known for having a faculty devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates.

Responsibilities:

The major responsibility of the position will be laboratory instruction in general chemistry during the fall and spring semesters. Other responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating multi-section laboratory courses.
  • Supervision of student workers.
  • Experimental and laboratory preparations.
  • Laboratory curriculum development.
  • Grading of laboratory assignments.
  • Assisting the department in remaining compliant with safety protocols, EPA regulations, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Departmental service.

The full-time (nine month) appointment will be made for a three-year period, with the potential for renewal, and includes healthcare, retirement, and personal tuition benefits. Additionally, a candidate who serves in this position continuously for three years is eligible for internal and external tuition benefits for their dependents. The successful candidate will teach an average of 9 contact hours per week, and laboratory class sizes are typically limited to 16 students or fewer. Additional compensation for summer instruction is sometimes possible. Skidmore supports faculty in many ways, including internal grants for faculty development, a new faculty learning community, a Center for Teaching and Learning, and funds to travel to meetings or workshops and for societal memberships. Skidmore has completed the first two of three phases of the innovative Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS).
